'Fright Night' Star Dave Franco Talks About 'Fun' Of Film, Surprises In Store

Finally "Fright Night" has been released in theaters. Which means that after following the production for over a year, and chatting up the cast members whenever possible, we can finally dig a little deeper into Craig Gillespe's remake of the '85 cult classic. MTV News caught up with Dave Franco recently, who plays Mark (a typical high school a--hole, according to Franco), to get some more scoop on his work in the film, scene-stealer David Tenant, and if we should watch out for any Easter eggs. Also, before we get to the goods, let me just add that Franco is one of the nicest, most laid-back actors in the biz. So genuine, friendly and just plain cool. MTV News: What were the highlights of filming the movie for you? Dave Franco: This one was really fun, mainly. Not only just working with good material and incredibly talented people all around, but just kind of the friendships I made on this one. It was one of these films where everyone got along so well. On most projects you make friends, but then everyone comes home and they have their own lives and everyone goes their separate ways, but on this one we all stayed in touch and just had a blast together. MTV: Do you have any favorite Easter egg moments that are specific nods to the original? Franco: There are definitely moments that fans of the original will love and appreciate, but I think it really is its own beast. A lot of the character arcs are different, particularly Charlies (Anton Yelchins) character, and my character wasnt even in the original. Theres a lot thats changed but I think it still maintains a lot of the fun of the original. Its just nice to have a vampire movie out there that really goes for it, thats a hard R, where the main vampire, the main villain, is vicious and very unapologetic, rather then kind of brooding and sensitive. MTV: How do people become vampires in "Fright Night"? What are the rules? Franco: Its kind of a classic vampire rule in terms of when you get bitten you turn, but with this it really kind of milks these moments where Colin is about to turn these particular characters. And there are scenes of projectile blood squirting everywhere, it really goes for it, it doesnt kinda tip toe around anything. MTV: Let's talk about David Tenant and what he adds to the film Franco: David Tenant, hes hilarious. I know hes very, very well known in England, but Im not sure how much people are aware of him here. But after this movie, I think his character steals the movie. I think at first people might try to cut him down and be like Oh hes just impersonating Russell Brand, but he really brings his own thing to it, and hes got a lot of layers. And everyone will see how funny the guy is, but then how real and kinda toned down he can be too. MTV: Im sure you were jealous of his wardrobe (which involves awesome leather pants). Franco: (Laughs) No comment. MTV: Come on, every dude wants to wear leather pants! Franco: I, uh . . . MTV: Okay, we'll leave that one alone for a bit. What more can you tell us about your role in "21 Jump Street"? Franco: I just finished filming that in New Orleans and Im really excited about that one. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, they play undercover cops who infiltrate this high school and try to stop the spread of this new drug called HFS, Holy F---ing S--t, and I play the eco-friendly, environmentally-conscious drug dealer who is spreading the drug around the school. It was a fun role where, again, I play I guess the quote-unquote cool guy at school. In this one hes got the element of being this eco-friendly guy in a way and you get to see a lighter side of him because Jonahs character kind of joins his gang and you get to see kind of a bromance form between mine and Jonahs character. Will you be going to see "Fright Night?" Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

The Inbetweeners Premiere Report

Oi oi, red carpet mongsFarewell Will, Jay, Simon and Neil, we've loved you so (from a safe distance). Short of following the boys to uni - not beyond the realms of possibility considering the social mayhem offered by freshers' week - The Inbetweeners Movie is a last, drunken salute from the much-loved posse. They went out in fine style on the red carpet of the movie's premiere - suited, booted and without a briefcase in sight. Nice to see Simon Bird bringing one of Will's natty bow ties along, though, as the boys made fwiends with the Leicester Square crowds. {The Inbetweeners Movie UK Premiere}It's been a meteoric ascent from Rudge Park Comprehensive to the bright lights of a West End premiere. The movie-fied E4 show takes Will, Simon (Joe Thomas), Neil (Blake Harrison) and the clunge-fixated Jay (James Buckley) on a lads' holiday to the island of Mali. But will it be turn out like Blue Lagoon or Blue Valentine for them? The movie's out today so go find those wellies.

New British Law Invites A-List Hollywood Talent to Live in England

Today in potentially ill-timed legislative news: England’s Tier 1 visa law — which allows for “exceptional talent” to fast-track their way through the country’s stringent immigration procedures en route to earning British citizenship — goes into effect. More details on the celeb-baiting measure after the jump. Britain’s Tier 1 Exceptional Talent measure allows for leaders or potential leaders in the fields of science, humanities, engineering and arts to immigrate more easily to the U.K. than previous visa laws allowed. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it, the arts category targets filmmakers and actors who have at least one major award on their mantlepiece already, or those who have been nominated in recent years: To be eligible, applicants must have won an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe or an Emmy Award or have been nominated in the five years before applying. The government has set aside 300 spots for anyone who meets the requirements. One of the potential upsides to this new law is that British producers will have an easier time casting American stars for their film productions; applicants granted Tier 1 status can work without a sponsor. Meanwhile, England is concurrently trying to reduce immigration numbers for non-Oscar nominee types, attempting to narrow net immigration to “tens of thousands.” A thousand spaces in total have been reserved for the Tier 1 program, so if you’re an Oscar/Emmy/Golden Globe winner, get packing. The Unsexy Domination of CBS (Analysis)

CBS You can't blame CBS for having a bit of a chip on its shoulder. Up until recently -- and sometimes still recently -- the network was a very easy target for cheap jokes. A network watched by old people. Home of shows like NCIS. The unsexiest network. The good but boring network. It goes on, in some form. And if NBC hadn't been driven into the ground so wrecklessly in the last, oh, decade, things might have been worse. But, of course, CBS is more than that, even when it's a lot of that. So when the network rolled into the Television Critics Association (along with sister network The CW and sister cable channel Showtime), it had a few things to remind critics about. "We're the No. 1 network in viewers," said entertainment president Nina Tassler. "We're the No. 1 network in upfront market revenue, and this season surprise, surprise, we are the No. 1 broadcast network in Emmy nominations, and I'm really happy about that." In a moment of snark control, someone even pointed out that all the jokes about its viewers being old -- as ABC's Jimmy Kimmel mocked at the upfronts in May and NBC's Joel McHale joked several days before CBS arrived at the press tour -- must be tiring. "Well, first, I think they should probably stick to comedy and check their stats a little better," Tassler said. "Because we still have more 18-49s than NBC and ABC. So maybe they stay with comedy and not worry about demos and ratings so much." Missing from those comments from Tassler: "So eat it!" (Although, if pressed, you might get something like that from Tassler off the stage, where she's much more fiery, funny and unfiltered.) "Ratings, revenue, and Emmy nominations, that's a pretty cool trifecta - and I don't play the horses - and speaks to the network's quality on the screen and our appeal to viewers as well as advertisers," Tassler added. "Now, if we can get the love from the TV critics, life would be perfect." That might be a little harder -- though not as difficult as it has been in the past. Though critics are not known for doling out praise to shows that are ratings winners if they don't merit the praise creatively, CBS does have a burgeoning roster of shows a lot of critics like, starting with The Good Wife, breezing through the comedies How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory, and settling on reality franchises Survivor and The Amazing Race. But that's about it. And honestly, if you're tracking love metrics, that's not the largest group of candidates, particularly when you realize how many other shows on the schedule are ignored (or awkwardly smiled at over in the corner and given a polite, non-meaningful wave). It's a schedule full of "meh" on a lot of nights. And yet, CBS probably wouldn't have it any other way. It's the best run broadcast network for a reason -- it understands its audience better than the others and gives those viewers what they want, critics be damned. (For example, from the network that adopted Medium and birthed Ghost Whisperer, comes this fall's feel-good person-who-sees-dead-people drama, A Gifted Man. On Fridays, no less. That's automatic for the people, baby. You can hear the wheels of precision at CBS.) Would getting a big bear hug from critics make life perfect, as Tassler said? You'd have to think such an emotional gesture would be met with stiffness from CBS and a worry we'd put a shiv in its back. Despite a history of throwing some really great parties, there's not historical timeline of CBS-critic canoodling. CBS does just fine beating everybody's ass and winning, thank you very much. It seems to have learned to function in the self-esteem department without needing our validation. And maybe that's a good thing. Reaction to new fall series Unforgettable, How to Be A Gentleman and A Gifted Man falls into the lukewarm category. They are buzzless and unsexy. Two other series from CBS are garnering something more akin to the love Tassler was looking for -- drama Person of Interest from J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan, and comedy 2 Broke Girls from Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings. Both of those latter shows have a lot of potential and, in fairness, few critics are really falling all over themselves for this fall's fare from any network. And yet, if you don't parse the two with buzz and take the batch as a whole, what's the reaction at hand? Well, if you've been paying attention at all to CBS in the last decade, you'd have to say a shrug and a "they will all probably work." That's not a sentiment that's going to steam up anyone's glasses. But it's going to keep CBS in the win column most nights (without even considering that Ashton Kutcher's arrival could clean up CBS's biggest mess in Two and A Half Men, while Ted Danson's arrival on CSI might perk up that franchise as well). So what do you call that if "sexy" is not even remotely in consideration? Oh, right, "successful." Email: Tim.Goodman@THR.com Twitter: @BastardMachine TCA CBS Nina Tassler TCA Summer Press Tour 2011

Summit Puts Alleged Breaking Dawn Pirate On Blast After She Holds Press Conference Maintaining Innocence

The Twilight Saga of the stolen sex scene footage rolls on! Today, after alleged footage pirate Daiana Santia of Argentina held a press conference to defend her name against accusations that she stole intellectual property from the unreleased Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn production, Summit Entertainment hit back in press release detailing the copyright infringement they say Santia committed and their months-long efforts to get her to cooperate with investigators. From Summit Entertainment: In response to the press conference held in Posadas, Argentina today called by Ms. Daiana Santia and her legal representation, Summit Entertainment would like to provide to media and the online community the following response and details that led to the legal action taken against Ms. Santia. First and most important this is NOT about greed or the Studio wanting to bully a woman from a small town in Argentina - rather, it is about stolen material that is private and sensitive which was obtained by illegally accessing private/secure servers as well as personal email accounts. Ms. Santia’s actions came to light after these materials began appearing on the internet towards the end of March, 2011. Since Summit learned of Ms. Santia’s involvement in late May 2011, Summit has been in contact with Ms. Santia and her representatives with no resolution or further good faith efforts on their part, thus the only alternative left was to pursue legal action to ascertain that Ms. Santia no longer holds the images and video in any shape or form. Prior to said action the studio clearly communicated to Ms. Santia and her representatives that a press release would be distributed naming the actions being taken as well as naming her specifically. Summit’s first meeting with the Santia family occurred on May 31, 2011 at which point the studio was told they would fully cooperate. A subsequent meeting took place on June 8, 2011 with Ms. Santia and her lawyer at which time Ms. Santia confessed to the intrusions. It is also important to note that Ms.Santia is 24 years of age. The family was contacted as a group as the IP address used was registered under a family name. Specifically on June 8, 2011 Ms. Santia confessed in the presence of her attorney that she accessed servers and email accounts via a systematic attack — stealing photographs, unfinished images and video footage over several months. Additionally there is indisputable evidence linking her directly to IP addresses that were used in the unauthorized access. Her actions appear to be premeditated and not done on a whim, but rather using technology and tactics that require thought as well as time and skill. Because Ms. Santia decided that she does not want to cooperate, Summit has been unable to settle this matter privately with Ms. Santia and her representatives in Argentina. Ms. Santia claims to have deleted the stolen materials off her lap top as well as her family’s desktop computer, however both common sense and historically similar cases have proven that a defendant’s word cannot be taken as final. Additionally, Summit must confirm the extent to which Ms. Santia shared the materials with others. When first approached by Summit, Ms. Santia’s representatives indicated their willingness to permit Summit to review the computers. Based on this communication, Summit flew technical experts to Posadas, only to have Ms. Santia renege on their offer after the arrival of these experts. To this day, Ms. Santia has refused to cooperate in giving Summit access to these two computers to verify for itself that the images and footage have in fact been deleted, and to confirm the extent to which files were shared. We do not feel this is an unreasonable request but rather a prudent move to protect the IP and the studio. Additionally the studio has made an offer to have representatives chosen by Ms. Santia present when the computers are searched in order to protect the Ms. Santia’s privacy relating to anything else that is not related to this particular situation as they are of no interest to the studio. Had Ms. Santia cooperated Summit and its representatives would have worked with her to reach a compromise that would not necessarily involve legal action in Argentina and the United States. Santia, meanwhile, maintained her innocence at her own press conference (hat tip to Twilight Lexicon for posting the Spanish-language reports) where the avowed Twilight fan admitted to seeing the images in question online but denied capturing or disseminating them. That seems a totally feasible explanation, but for one detail: Per Summit’s press release, Santia had admitted to “[accessing] servers and email accounts via a systematic attack — stealing photographs, unfinished images and video footage over several months.” Is it even possible to hack servers and email accounts by accident? In response to the charge, Santia claimed she lacks the computer proficiency such action would involve. Santia’s defensive position in the name of personal privacy is equally intriguing here. In resisting Summit’s repeated requests to investigate her personal computer and having been publicly made an example of (a warning blast to other/future Twilight pirates?) Santia’s claims of privacy violation are not insignificant. According to Santia’s attorney, Summit’s reps said they were also investigating other parties, and she may file a counterclaim against Summit for harassment.
