Benicio Del Toro, Others Linked to Outcry Over Academy's 'Discriminatory' Puerto Rico Ban
Benicio Del Toro, Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales are among the stars named in a protest of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ new rule to block Puerto Rico from competing in the Foreign-Language Oscar race. Their concerns were made public this morning in a press release distributed by Puerto Rican producer Frances Lausell, who said that the Academy rejected her film America from submission after last year’s decision to exclude the U.S. territory from the running. At the time, AMPAS executive director Bruce Davis explained the rationale in a letter to the Puerto Rico Film Commission [PDF here]: We are aware of course that few issues present as much complexity as the determination of Puerto Rico’s political status. Past Academy committees have tended to sidestep the issue, or to conclude that Puerto Rico was near enough to being a sovereign nation to warrant inclusion in the Foreign Language competition. That view has now been abandoned. The current committee, working from the fact that Puerto Rican artists are U.S. citizens, has ruled that in allowing them to compete in this particular category, the Academy would open itself to the same suspicion of favoritism that we have been at pains to avoid with respect to filmmakers based in the fifty states. On the one hand, the committee is consistent: Just a few weeks ago it ruled Albania’s entry, The Forgiveness of Blood, ineligible because of “crew composition” that included American director Joshua Marston (who’d been through this previously with his acclaimed Maria Full of Grace). This came despite Blood’s Albanian language dialogue, co-written by native scribe Andamion Murataj. On the other hand, as Marston alluded when the decision came down, the committee is vague and more than a little myopic. Citing Rule 14 of the Oscars (“A foreign-language film is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track”), Puerto Rico Film Commissioner Mariella Perez Serrano argued further this month in a letter to AMPAS [PDF here]: This provision does not require that the producers, the director, or any member of the cast or crew must be a non-US citizen. In order [sic] words, the criterion for this category is not who makes the film, but where it is produced and the language of the dialogue track. Therefore, the films made in Puerto Rico can be eligible under the regulations for the Foreign Language Film category because they are produced outside the United States and provided they have a predominantly non-English dialogue track. Only 11 Puerto Rican films have ever been submitted to the Academy for consideration, with just one — the 1990 effort Lo que le pas a Santiago — earning a Best Foreign Language Film nomination. (It lost to Cinema Paradiso.) Nevertheless, Lausell has a petition up and running at RecognizePuertoRico.com, invoking various screen imprimaturs of Puerto Rican heritage in a campaign to reverse the Academy’s “offensive” ruling: The decision is incorrect on many levels, as even our production company is considered a foreign corporation for tax and legal purposes, because it’s registered to do business in Puerto Rico. […] I understand the Academy was lead to make an uninformed decision that could wrongly portray it as a discriminatory entity against Latinos and Puerto Ricans. I just want to help them make the right decision based on all the facts. Fair enough. That said, A Separation is going to run the table in February, and the way overdue Michael Haneke has his Isabelle Huppert stroke-victim heart-wrencher on the way for 2012, so maybe just give it a couple years? Chris Martin: Gwyneth Has Been A Great Beard For Me
First Published: October 25, 2011 10:24 PM EDT Credit: The Ellen DeGeneres Show Caption Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin of Coldplay on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Oct. 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Coldplays Chris Martin doesnt like to talk about his marriage to Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, but hes OK joking about it. On Tuesday, as he and Coldplays Jonny Buckland taped an appearance for Thursdays episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Chris had a little fun about his relationship with the actress. You have a great relationship and two precious kids. And we love Gwyneth, Ellen said, trying to coax something out of the British rocker. Shes been here many times. Shes been a great beard for me now, for 10 years, Chris said, tongue-in-cheek. She just pretends that shes your wife? Ellen probed. Yeah, its hard to believe, Chris laughed. Chris recently revealed that his marriage to Gwyneth is his only serious relationship and he admitted his lack of big love before the actress led him to join a band. I think a lot of people like me and Jonny join bands because we were really not doing so well, Chris added. With women? Ellen asked. With anybody. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. 'Paranormal Activity 3': What's Your Favorite Found Footage Film?
With the release of "Paranormal Activity 3," the found footage genre has a new entry. Known for its quiet, everyday moments before big scares with a heightened sense of realism, found footage has become a staple of the horror genre in a few short years. The shaky, faux-documentary style really came into its own with 1999's "The Blair Witch Project," but examples of similar films can be traced back to as early as 1980 with the infamous "Cannibal Holocaust." "Blair Witch" set off the biggest and most recent crop of found footage films, but the latest releases probably owe their popularity to 2008's "Cloverfield" and the original "Paranormal Activity." Ultra-cheap to make, the movies can either work because of their low-budget scares or stink of a movie studio trying to cash in on the latest movie fad without spending as much. Even the king of the zombie movie, George A. Romero, tried it out in "Diary of the Dead." So we want to know which found footage movie you think is the best. Does the nod go to the movie that started it all, "The Blair Witch Project"? Or do you prefer your scares on the more "Paranormal" side? Vote for your favorite in our poll past the break! Let us know why you think your choice is the best in the comments below and on Twitter.

James Cameron on 'Avatar' Sequels: More Planets, More Water, Less Politics
James Cameron has been making the rounds to promote the April 2012 re-release of 'Titanic 3D,' but the Oscar-winning King of the World recently sat down with ABC's Nightline to discuss something other than filmmaking: his role as an environmentalist and hybrid owner. Thankfully for you, that topic didn't stop ABC's Bill Weir from asking a few movie-related questions, including the director's thoughts on the upcoming 'Avatar' sequels. First and foremost, viewers will have the opportunity to explore another side of the Na'avi planet Pandora: the ocean. Well, I'm really writing the second and third films together, so it completes a kinda three film story arc. And we will see the oceans of Pandora ... which we haven't seen at all, and that's an ecosystem that I'm dying to start designing because its going to look spectacular. But now it narrows the spotlight instead of just nature in general or the rainforest. It focuses it a little more on ocean issues, because we have a planet that's a blue planet. From a distance, you look at it, the Earth is a lot more blue than it is, you know brown, the land mass. We're making the oceans unsurvivable for a lot of the species right now. For a lot or reasons. It's just a way to focus a little energy in that direction. And there will be other planets as well, besides Pandora. It will be a cornucopia, a treat for the eyes. The director added that while the sequels would have the same feel as the first movie, there will still be plenty of room for discovery -- for both audiences and the characters themselves. I think it's just a continuation of the same thing. I want people to feel that same sense of excitement about that world. You know, the fictional Na'vi people and I want them to feel that excitement of discovery of a new world that they're going to see things that they haven't imagined. All that sort of the perk package of the first movie is still going to be there. And the themes will be there and be played out in a way that I think people can accept. Cameron also addressed the political nature of the first film, and that the 'Avatar' sequels weren't going to hit you over the head with an overtly pro-environment message. (When the first movie was released, back in 2009, some wondered whether it was pure entertainment or a pointed political statement.) I'm not going to become more strident. I'm not going to say, 'Well, we got away with this much environmental content in the first movie, now there's double.' Because I think that would be a mistake. It has to be entertainment first and foremost. Oh, and as for 'Titanic,' Cameron recently watched it for the first time in five years. His thoughts? "You know, it's kinda slow at the beginning, [but] it gets going." [ABC via Coming Soon] [Photo: 20th Century Fox] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Ronald Reagan Film Career To Be Honored In Washington DC Nov. 14 By Motion Picture Industry & Reagan Centennial Celebration
EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that the Motion Picture Association Of America representing the Hollywood movie studios will be co-hosting a tribute to Ronald Reagan’s film career on November 14th in Washington DC. The other host will be the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration, which is the year-long commemoration of Reagans 100th birthday in 2011. All the movie studios are obtaining old footage of Reagan’s 53-movie legacy from 1937 to 1965 and are putting together around 5 cinematic profiles of the former Screen Actors Guild president for the bipartisan event. But I suspect the real reason behind this Reagan tribute is to remind the Republican Party going into this election that Reagan was part of Hollywood. After all, the GOP and showbiz are barely on speaking terms these days, and recently the MPAA hired former Democratic Senator Chris Dodd to head the Hollywood lobbying organization even though certainly the House and likely the Senateand maybe even the White House, too, will be under Republican control in 2012.But the MPAA, which bills itself asthe voice and advocate of the American motion picture industry, needs to continue toenlist the U.S. governments help in fighting piracy overseas as well obtaining tax breaks for Big Media. The Hollywood studios participating in the tribute consist of theWalt Disney Studios Motion Pictures (owned by Walt Disney Co), Paramount Pictures Corporation (owned by Viacom),Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc (owned by Sony Corp), Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (owned by News Corp), Universal City Studios LLC (owned by Comcast),and Warner Bros Entertainment Inc (owned by Time Warner). Just to remind you,Reagan grew up in Illinois, attended college, and became aradio sports announcer (“Dutch” Reagan) until he moved to California after a screen test in 1937 won him a Warner Bros contract inHollywood.Commissioned as a cavalry officer after the outbreak of WWII, Reagan was assigned to the Army Air Force’sFirst Motion Picture Unit making mostly training films in Los Angeles. He was typecast as the affable friend in mostly B movies and never reached the pinnacle of filmdom, despitemany memorable roles like Knute Rockne – All American (1940) and Kings Row (1942) and Hasty Heart (1950). His tenure as SAG presidentwas marked by controversy because of the tumultuous political climateof McCarthyism, andReagan became embroiled in disputesover the issue of Communism in the union and film industry in general. In the early 1950s, actress Nancy Davis discovered her name was on one of the blacklists and she couldn’t find work as a result. She soughthelp from Reagan in his capacity asSAG president: hesucceeded in removing her namefrom the listandlater marriedher. Reagan testified as a friendly witness before the HouseUn-American Activities Committee which was blacklistingactors, directors, and writers suspected of communistsympathies. Soon his own political views shifted from liberalDemocratic like his father to conservative Republican like his second wife Nancy’s. The then 43-year-old actor had been reduced to performing in Las Vegas as an emcee for a song-and-dance act when he turned to television and became the host of General Electric Theater. Reagan alsowas aspokesman for thecompany and went onpromotional tours orchestrated by GEs PR department and advertising agency. In all, Reaganvisited GEs 135 research and manufacturing facilities and met some 250,000 people. His popularity soared in the South, which, according to his biographers, planted the seeds for Southern conservatives to later underwrite his rise to the presidency. By 1962, Reagans GE Theater appearances were marred by the controversy around the Justice Departments antitrust investigation of histalent agency MCA and the SAG waivers he’d granted as union president to his rep Lew Wasserman. At the same time Reagans increasingly anti-government advocacy while on tourbegan to vex GEs brass. The reason, I was told by Reagan’s longtime agent Arthur Parks, was because GE was bidding on a Tennessee generator project and didnt want Reagans political speeches to blow the contract. So the companys ad agency laid it on the line: Reagans option wouldnt be picked up unless he shut up. Reagan thought it over, and then stunned his agents by saying no. They couldnt believe that Reagan was turning down a half-million-dollar deal.GE’s presidenteven spoke to Reagan personally but couldnt get the actor to back off. Afterward, the GE exec phoned Parks with one last request: Call Mr. Reagan and tell him I admire him more now than I did before I made the call for sticking to his guns. That year Reagan officially changed his political party affiliation andwent on to become a key spokesman for conservatism which led him to run for political office and win election asGovernor ofCalifornia in 1966 for two terms. (When asked by a reporter how he would perform in office, Reagan replied, I don’t know. I’ve never played a governor.) Reagan went on to become the 40th U.S. president from 1981 until 1989.He remains without doubt the most successful actor in Hollywood history – not for his films but for his political activism.Watch X-Men: First Class
